Trying to Find a Realtor: What to Consider
The first thing may observe while trying to find professional home-buying help is all the various titles – agent, broker, realtor, etc. So are they all one and the same thing? Not at all! But just to make it clear why you need to find a realtor rather than an agent or a broker, realtors are certified by the National Association of Realtors, an industry association that holds its members to a code of ethics known for its stringency. In other works, hiring a realtor assures you that you will be treated as fairly and honestly as possible.
Then again, that’s not where it ends, considering that even among realtors themselves, there are nuances that will eventually define what your final experience with them will be like. Hence, when trying to find a realtor, it’s wise to talk to three prospects at least so you can draw helpful comparisons and make a powerful decision. Here are questions that will help you extract the information you need for such comparisons:
How long have you been involved in the real estate business?
You don’t just want to find a realtor; you want an experienced one, meaning at least three years of being an agent or broker. More experience means more knowledge and skills to make your transaction as smooth as possible.
How many years have you lived in this area?
One remarkable exception to that last question if the realtor you’re considering has been a resident of the area for a really long time. You shouldn’t automatically remove a newly licensed agent from your list. If they’ve been a resident of the area their whole life, they probably know more about the place than an experienced agent who just moved to the region. Weigh the realtor’s general experience against their local experience before coming up with a decision.
Do you work with a team or alone?
There are many standalone agents who are just great excellent, but don’t discount the value of a team. Note that team members are more likely to have increased response times and availability.
At what times do you usually work?
Unless they’re working full-time in real estate, ask them what times of the day they’re available. Obviously, if their schedule doesn’t match yours, you may end up losing many opportunities.
Are you thinking of going on a vacation?
If they are, in fact, planning on an out-of-town trip, make sure there is someone you can talk to in case you find a nice property during their absence.
Of course, to find a realtor is only the beginning. But this part, you should do absolutely right if you want the rest of the process to go in the same direction.
